I'm sure there are a ton of posts/articles out there on Guru's recent death, his impact on Hip-Hop, and his place in the community. So I will leave that to the experts with a broader view and more in depth knowledge. I just wanted to put out a little story about a meeting we had with him.
Mista Fista and I were at a record release party in Hollywood for Full Clip - so what does it make it...'99. It was sponsored by Fistas record pool, so there were a bunch of semi-famous djs there hanging out in the lounge. Guru and Premier stepped in and basically got mobbed by everyone. I guess being either respectful or overly polite, we just hung back at our table waiting for a convenient opening.
At some point Guru looked over, saw us sitting there, Gang Starr singles and sharpies in hand. He stopped the conversation he was having and waived us over to sit down with him and Premier. We talked about nothing in particular, just shooting the shiest, but he was real down to earth. He took his time and signed our records. Guru and Premier even recorded a couple of KFA drops for us - and sure they aren't the best quality (being recorded in a club and all - is that really "Make The Music With Your Mouth Biz" in the background?), but still thinking about it, it was a really cool encounter.
R.I.P. Guru!
